page 3.13 - she's HEAVY too...

this is where the older page-update posts go... because they are dead. :o these topics are generally locked upon being moved, but kept around in case people wanna check out the old extra joke arts posted in some of them. =)

one of my friends wants to doodle some pics as her. xD

And duuuude it happens sooo often that these ads are so false. It really pisses me
off... on TWC it happens a lot. I'll vote for one of the comics I am reading and it
shows me the avatar for another comic. I'm like "oh that looks hot." and then the
rest of the comic is drawn in this really shitty shakey line art or like you said, just
pencils. Like I said, it's immediate results [getting people to look at your site] but
then people are pissed and leave due to the false advertisement. I am normally
willing to give comics even with subpar art a try, as long as the story is good,
but tricking me into looking? Thanks but no. Fuck you. LOL

Speaking of ads, I need to make more... I only do the buttons atm on PW and I need
to do some of the skyscraper ones... but as it is, I don't get a whole long of PW money
so I don't want to spend like over a dollar for adspace. A lot of these places have a
minimum of a dollar for their skyscrapers!! @_@ It's harsh... and I'm a bit too ADD
to join a buncha other forums to help spread the word lol...

Yeah, no kidding about the TWC... T_T I bet we've probably clicked some of the same buttons, then, since we feel similarly on this topic. I hate it when there's pretty colored realistic art and then crappy lineart on the other side. It's okay if it's GOOD lineart! I don't mind GOOD lineart! I like good black and white comics and don't feel cheated if they color their art! (Say... Darken. Ads for Darken are usually colored but they look like the comic art!) It's when you get the Mona Lisa and click to find Bob and George that really pisses me off. I'll read a comic with crappy art if the story's interesting and even the other way around... >_> But don't lie to me to get me there. D:

And ads...

If you put a skyscraper on the right and or left of your site you'll get more money than just having the row of buttons. The deal is with all the buttons there's not as much competition to get an ad up on your site. With one skyscraper people will have to fight for it. I make enough money from having one skyscraper and three buttons to cover most of my advertising--I haven't put money into there for months, and as long as I'm careful with advertising I've been making enough to break even. :original happy:

Don't bid on the sites that want like, 20 dollars a day, or have a minimum bid of 1 dollar or whatever. (Also remember you don't have to leave the ad up all day--you can cancel at any time and it won't charge you a dollar. If you left it up for 12 hours it would charge you 50 cents.) It might seem advantageous to bid on these huge sites but I find my best bids are when I make longterm low cost bids. Say, I put an ad on this one site for 20 cents a day and leave it up for a month. Maybe sometimes it gets pushed up to 50 cents a day and I'm not winning but sometimes it drops down and my ad is displayed. It works pretty well. I have a button on The Phoenix Requiem and though it doesn't usually show up, the cost drops sometimes and then my button goes up, and I get some pretty decent traffic from that for a pretty low cost.

But remember: your best visitors will come from things like joining other forums, even if you're ADD, and commenting on other people's comics. It will give you LESS vistors but people more likely to read through. And if you're already on other forums, SIG BANNER. If it's not a webcomic forum, add 'a webcomic' to your sig banner. Twitter and DeviantArt are also good for both building connections and traffic--follow other artists, link whenever you update on Twitter, post art on DeviantArt and link to your comic in your sig and from EVERY PICTURE YOU EVER POST. Link exchanges are good too if you're not morally opposed to them--networking is good. Joining places like Palace in the Sky and Tomgeeks also give traffic. You don't have to buy advertising to get traffic. ^_^ It just gives nice, big immediate numbers. Ego boost, really. =P

But yeah, you're only making a few cents a day, I see... if you're not going to switch over to say, maybe, a leaderboard where the buttons are instead (that would give you more money) or add a skyscraper to the side, your best bet with Project Wonderful is definately low cost buttons, long term bids in the one cent a day range... and keep an eye on them to make sure they're giving you at least two cents or less a click. (I can get .002 cents a click on buttons; I'm cheap and won't settle for paying more than two cents a click... and I've found I'm more likely to get this on smaller sites. Better bang for your buck!)

Anyway, there's my bit of thoughts on advertising from personal experience... I've found the better readers come from forums, and commenting on other webcomics... and you don't have to spend much on Project Wonderful if you're careful... and there are excellent free ways to advertise your webcomic if you know where to look. Collectives, webcomic lists, art sites, social networking... mmm... traffic.

@Tiana: omg I love you for this post lol. I just have trouble keeping up
with other forums, esp if they are busy ones...

I need to change the layout so I can add in skyscraper and banner ads.
This one I didn't build with ads in mind =( Also this layout is sort of
looking out of date to me lmao...

Ugh, I will reply better later, I am half watching Big Bang Theory atm lol

Aww, I like your layout, especially the banner (you should definately make a bigger version of it available as a wallpaper). I think there's room for a skyscraper, on either side of the layout. You just might need to tweak the code a bit to dump them there... though optimally your site should have the comic on the front page, that way if someone clicks a link or add it's obvious that it's a comic. Your latest page link is pretty small so if you redesign, maybe keep that in mind?

You don't have to really keep up with forums, just drop in every now and again. ^_^ I suggest The Webomic List's forums and Tomgeek's forums. Ones like ComicGenesis, DrunkDuck, SmackJeeves are really only good if you host or mirror there or it just looks like you're trying to get traffic. Collective forums are okay, but usually fairly inactive because often members just post in the member boards... (forums like SpiderForest, Sage, Keenspot, etc). Webcomic specific forums can be good (like I'm doing here! HI VISITORS TO MY SITE! YOU HAVE UNCOVERED MY DEVIOUS PLA... no, I'm just kidding.) as long as you, you know, have read the comic in question and can participate in discussions. (So how about that latest update, hey?)

Joining a collective if you're interested in being part of a community is definately something worth a shot if you want those kind of connections--just do your research on them first. I definately suggest you join Palace in the Sky (looks like your traffic's high enough to meet the requirements) if you feel like adding another ad to your site... traffic in exchange for hosting their ad isn't a bad deal...

Trust me, I'm full of advice on webcomicky stuff. I did a ridiculous amount of research and I spend SO much time trolling but not posting on forums it isn't even funny.

Yeah I have been considering redoing the layout so that there is some side
space for ads and also to have the page visible. Initially I worried about like
new comers getting spoilers, but I guess it is prolly better to have it in the
front to actually hook people lol... also then they know the art actually
improves as I go along lol.

I don't have mirrors for my comic, but I see a lot of people get hits thru
pages like that...idk.Wish I had someone to do all this advertising for
me lmao. It's really time consuming...

I drew up a skyscraper ad:
Image
I like it but idk if I should use it yet, since I haven't even gotten to this story
arc yet lol... [few chapters off...]

The problem with the skyscraper is that the text is really small once sized down to the right size. It's a good skyscraper, though. :-) But you know you don't have to draw new art? Just use art from your comic. :)

And yes, it's better to have the comic on the front page so that people see it and know 'this is a comic' and also to see the art and that it gets better. It's very rarely better to not have the comic on the front page. It's better if you update with multiple pages (The Phoenix Requiem) or your website is a portal to more than one webcomic (War of Winds) but in your case I think you can just push the news down to the bottom, have the page show up on the front page, and make sure there's a very obvious 'first comic' button. With your current layout--well--maybe my monitor is bigger than yours but it looks like there's tons of space for a skyscraper.

Advertising doesn't have to be too time consuming if you don't want it to be. ^_^ You can always just set campaigns up on Project Wonderful with a money limit and let them go automatically.

Mirror pages have value especially if you want to involve yourself in that community. If you mirror, I recommend DrunkDuck or SmackJeeves and COMMENT on other comics and POST IN THE FORUMS, ComicGenesis isn't worth mirroring on and it's barely worth mirroring as an advertising method without being active in the community. I gave it a shot and wasn't too pleased with the results. Too much work for not enough result... keep any mirrors behind your main comic and make it clear that you can read more at your main URL, if you do it.

Presently I have my main page (on SpiderForest), and I keep a mirror around a month behind on ComicGenesis just because I do get hits from their newsbox rotator and people have links to that one... I'm just too lazy to redirect so I update it occasionally. I tried mirroring on DrunkDuck and SmackJeeves and keep forgetting I have them, but DrunkDuck is pretty good for the crazy comic reading commenty people--it's definately the best choice for mirroring.

I am wayy too interested in advertising, can you tell? D:

Naw, I have a widescreen and set to the widest..so there is a lot of space,
but I just feel like it would look wierdo with the borders... I could have Josh
try it tho...

As for front page, yes. I will be doing that. Then maybe I can add a comment
thing to it, like that Disqus thing if I can get it, maybe... then have the skyscrapers
on the side in a specified place. I just really want to redo the layout... but this is
a lot of work for my fiance lol. So it's whenever he is up for it. I might just use the
same pic for the time being but build a new layout graphic around it...

Also i made a buncha buttons for things a while ago, for like a store, first page,
latest page, etc... so that would be nice lol.

Lol yeah after I resized it, I fixed the text to be bigger, and actually edited
it a bit more:

^this is the one I uploaded xD

Oh crap I forgot I was posting this...Josh turned on xfiles and I immediately
zoned out to it.

I might try mirroring on one of those sites... but I can't allow myself to get
involved in too many communities...I end up spending hours when I only meant
to spend a few minutes xD I have badddd add.
